Marburg Virus Outbreaks in Africa

ABI is closely monitoring emerging viral threats across the continent, including the recent Marburg Virus Disease situation in Ethiopia and the surge of Mpox cases in Western Africa. During this critical period, ABI is collaborating with scientists and public-health partners to gather real-time evidence, analyze outbreak trends, and generate actionable insights. These efforts aim to strengthen African health systems and enhance preparedness against current and future epidemics.

Artemisinin-Based Antimalarial Drugs

Artemisinin-based combination therapies (ACTs) remain the cornerstone of malaria treatment across Africa. However, emerging partial resistance to artemisinin compounds in some regions poses a growing challenge to malaria control. ABI is working closely with researchers to monitor drug-resistance patterns, evaluate treatment efficacy, and support the development of strategies to safeguard ACT effectiveness.

Antimicrobial Resistance Is Increasing More Than Ever!

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is rising at an alarming pace, threatening the effectiveness of lifesaving treatments. In response, ABI is designing studies to identify the key drivers of AMR and assess its impact on disease control across Africa. Additionally, ABI will be supporting scientists throughout the continent to better understand malaria dynamics, enabling the development of targeted interventions that can reduce transmission and improve treatment outcomes.
